I created this blog in 2009 when I began working at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. My work at this organization opened my eyes to food justice issues in America, and I had a strong desire to better understand the difficulties many people face when trying to access healthy food on a limited budget. So, I embarked on my own Food Stamp Challenge, living on $31/week as a vegan. I used this blog to chronicle my experience.

While my Food Stamp Challenge project has come to an end, you can see what I learned from it by reading the Greatest Hits posts linked to the right side of the page. Please excuse any out-of-date links, as I am no longer updating this blog on a regular basis.

Farmers Markets

I have a feeling that Farmer's Markets are going to be key.

After today I will say that the lack of food variety (lentils and rice for 2 meals now) is getting to me. After skipping dinner last night, I was very hungry throughout the day.
Lesson #4: If you have to ration your food carefully, skipping meals is a bad idea. It leaves you very hungry and makes it hard to stick to small, rationed portions later on.

Today I also found a fantastic site called Local Harvest. This website allows you to find a farm or farmer's market anywhere in the nation. I think it is a good enough resource that I have added it to this site (see right bar with links.) Try it out and see what you find in your area.

This weekend I am hitting Farmer's Markets in Echo Park, South Central, and Watts. All three supposedly take Food Stamps/EBT, but we'll see how easy that is when I actually go there.

  1. Local harvest is a for profit organization that often has annoying ads and subliminal messaging for products that may be better than others. Check out the Eat Well Guide instead. I interned for them for a while (so, yes, I am biased) but they are a legitimately good organization (http://www.eatwellguide.org/i.php?pd=Home ). Cheers
